Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neuro-developmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, communication and repetitive behaviors. 1 in 59 children are found to have ASD and four times more common in boys than girls. ASD children experience challenges in sensory integration. They suffer from symptoms related to vision and visual processing problems and most of their behaviors are likely due to lacunae in their visual functions. At PreciEyes we have specially curated vision therapy services for autism kids.
A child with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder may exhibit
- Poor eye contact with people
- Little or no facial expressions
- Lack of emotional reciprocity
- Inability to develop peer interaction
- Hand flapping or finger flicking near face
- Spinning objects close to face
- Marked delay in verbal communication
- Lack of imaginative paly
- Repetitive motor activities
- Resistance towards changing routines
- Prolonged fixation on lights or any objects rather than people
- Toe walking
- Lack of interest in one’s surroundings
Behaviours that are common among children with ASD like toe walking, hand flapping or flicking fingers near their faces are merely compensations of their poor visuo-spatial skills. They often struggle to understand their own body, relate themselves with objects in space and relate between any two objects in space. They also struggle in exhibiting higher order visuo-spatial abilities like space conservation, logical reasoning and representational thoughts. To compensate these inabilities these children, rely overly on other sensory inputs like proprioception.
These visual spatial and visual processing disorders can effectively be addressed through individualized vision therapy programs aimed to improve skills like body awareness, laterality, directionality, eye movements and tracking skills, visual discrimination abilities, visual closure, visual form constancy, visual figure ground, visual memory and visualization. Such individualized vision therapy programs not only enhance the visual skills but also establish neurological connections between the eyes and brain in children with ASD.
At PreciEyes an individualized vision therapy program with age-appropriate exercises and activities are offered to children with ASD. The vision therapy program would support your child in understanding the environment, establish a connect and interact with greater certainty. It brings in a positive impact in terms of reducing anxiety, stopping repetitive behaviors, improve language, communication and social skills.
